It’s that time of the year again Halloween Time and looking for fun activities for adults and kids here is a good place to start check out this list:

October is approaching and that means pumpkin patches and Halloween events.  Halloween related celebrations are starting as early as September in Los Angeles and nearby counties.  Our Halloween Guide 2022 – Los Angeles and Beyond can get your planning ready during this year’s activities. If you’re looking for an excursion with the kids and family, or scary adventures for the grown-ups, there’s lots of options from which to choose.

With fall in the air, you’ll find many special Halloween themed events.  And certainly don’t forget to get a pumpkin, or a few for your home.  It’s indeed a great time for family fun.

The Places Where We Go brings together an especially curated list of top-rated events you can schedule on your calendar.  We’ve got you covered for pumpkin patches and hayrides at farms.  While most local communities will have the typical stands with stacks of pumpkins for sale, others go the extra mile adding activities to entertain the kids.  Some of these places will charge a fee to participate.

The following list is in the order of city names spread among several Southern California counties.  Look for places close to your home, or areas within a reasonable driving distance.  We’re sure that no matter where you live, you’ll surely find great options nearby.

LOS ANGELES COUNTY HALLOWEEN GUIDE 2022

Calabasas – Nights of the Jack

The ultimate Halloween event is back at King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas.  Night of the Jack features Halloween fun for everyone.  A 2/3-mile trail at the ranch has blazing gourds around every corner.  See a spook-tacular illuminated light show experience under the California autumn sky.  Live carving is demonstrated at this event.

The event is kid friendly, and they can see their favorite characters in pumpkin form. Adults can enjoy a seasonal cocktail at the Spookeasy bar while the littles can enjoy festive fall treats.  Some of LA’s best food trucks will be serving meals on site.  Don’t forget to visit the souvenir shop before departing to get a memento from your visit.

Most guests spend just over an hour on the site engaging in the activation zone before or after walking the trail.  This is a largely popular event, typically attracting 100,000 visitors per season.

Culver City – Mr. Bones Pumpkin Patch

Mr.  Bones Pumpkin Patch delivers a Halloween experience in the heart of they city.  You might even see a few celebrities enjoying the fun here. Enjoy events, food and entertainment. And, while you visit, it’s a fun place to get your pumpkins. Check the website as the site occasionally closes for private events.

Fall harvest pumpkins

La Cañada Flintridge – Carved at Descano Gardens

Carved is a family-friendly event for all ages. For three weeks in October, hundreds of carved pumpkins will line the Camellia Forest and Oak Grove. Along with pumpkins, the ever-popular pumpkin house, hay maze, and holiday-themed food and beverages will return. Guests can also enjoy UV “black light” experiences, artists sculpting pumpkins, and a special Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) installation at the Amphitheater.

Los Angeles – Bob Barker Marionette Theater Halloween Spooktacular

The spooky season begins here September 18th.  Gather your goblins and ghoulies for a great seasonal show- HaLLoWe’eN SpoOkTaCuLaR! You’ll be delighted by this haunting showcase of sweet spooks, including the Purple People Eater, Dracula, the Invisible Man, and many more! 

The hour-long family friendly boo-sical revue, features over one hundred puppets.  It’s a great eerie experience for everyone.

Los Angeles – Haunted Little Tokyo Block Party 

On Saturday October 30, the Little Tokyo Ghost Club will be transforming the community for the annual Haunted Little Tokyo, a fun-filled Halloween celebration with frightfully fun events that are perfect for ghosts and ghouls of all ages.  The block party event is for ages 21 and up.

This year, the “Block Party” will move to an outdoor secret location in Little Tokyo! The event will include all the favorites from previous block parties including DJs, drinks, food, and a costume contest. The location will be shared upon check-in at Brunswig Square (360 E. 2nd Street).

Light food and drinks will be available for purchase. This is also a dog-friendly event!

Guests must be 21 or over and provide proof of vaccination or negative Covid-19 test result within 72 hours before entering the event. The event is free with RSVP prior to the event.

Los Angeles – Haunted Little Tokyo Pumpkin Patch 

The Haunted Little Tokyo Pumpkin Patch will offer a bone-chilling good time with pumpkins for purchase. Pumpkins will be from Tanaka Farms, a beloved Japanese American family farm located in Irvine, California. Activities at the Pumpkin Patch will be free and include a photo opportunity and a coloring contest.

Los Angeles – Los Angeles Philharmonic – Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Carrying on the annual tradition, this year’s special Halloween treat is a screening of the silent horror movie classic, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.   Organist Clark Wilson will provide music befitting the spooky movie. Come see a classic version of the Robert Louis Stevenson tale featuring leading man John Barrymore.  The dangerous experiments of Dr. Jekyll reveal his dark side after drinking the potion.

Los Angeles – Los Angeles Haunted Hayride

The ultimate Halloween event in Los Angeles is unlike most experiences.   The Witch of the Woods has cast her spell to summon the spirits of the underworld to cross over and assimilate into form. The Hayride leads to a thrilling adventure of horrors afflicting the town. Dazed within the spell cast upon them, the Witch commands her army of crops and flesh to seek revenge on the people that have casted her out. The Spirit of Halloween comes to life surrounding helpless victims brave enough to board The Hayride.

Los Angeles – LA Zoo – Boo at the Zoo

Universal City – Universal Studios Hollywood – Halloween Horror Nights

Universal Studios Hollywood presents one of the scariest Halloween events in Southern California.  Summon your scream squad to Universal Studios Hollywood’s Halloween Horror Nights with eight haunted houses, the Terror Tram, scare zones, a live show and exhilarating attractions. Whether you’re a superfan, here for the snacks or selfies, scared of everything or skeptical of everyone, remember, never go alone.

San Clemente – Casa Creepy

For 3 nights each year, Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens in San Clemente becomes a 1920s-themed haunted house and gardens.  Walk through 2.5 acres of the most haunted mansion on the block! Werewolves, vampires and ghosts are waiting behind every corner of our historic home, and you can bet on plenty of creepy-crawlies in the gardens.

Casa Romantica’s haunted walk contains sudden movement and sounds, and parts of the walk take place on unpaved or uneven historic grounds. All participants are required to agree to a waiver for this event in order to participate.

Casa Creepy Haunted House is suitable for most families with children ages 8 and up; please use your discretion. Costumes are encouraged; costume masks not allowed but medical masks are allowed.

This limited entrance events is capped at 250 guests per event and entry is timed.

San Diego – The Haunted Trail of Balboa Park

It’s a one-of-a-kind haunt experience and has been called one of the top haunted attractions in the United States. Experience two haunts in one.

The 3,500 square foot eXperiment Maze provides a mile long terrifying outdoor trail.  Be on guard as you move through twisted pines and gnarled oaks. 

Next, experience the Haunted Trail. Climb onto the Ghoul Bus where a cloister of Nuns share the scary ride with you. Beware the chainsaw-wielding zombie rodeo clowns around the corner as they look to bring you into their slaughterhouse.

This event is geared toward adults who have guts to brave the chills and thrills.
